I abhor cigarette smoke and am not even an ex-smoker. I never smoked, never will but absolutely died when we traveled during my childhood in the backseat while my mom smoked like a chimney in the front. That was enough reason to never light up. That said, maybe the OP had a diesel engine running annoying the surly man. If someone drives by while I am walking in a campground and stops to ask directions, I will ask them to turn off their engine. Similarly, if we stop, we shut off our engine.
