To make the best use of your short time in San Francisco, I'd highly recommend this small van tour of all the highlights. Even our daughter, who lives there, was very impressed. We stayed on the north side of the bay and drove to the Larkspur Ferry and took it across - passing Alcatraz. At the Ferry Landing Building the van was waiting for us... very easy.

Be sure you read thoroughly about the 4x4 White Rim Rd. in Canyonlands. I hope you have some 4-wheeling experience as getting stuck out there in the heat with no shade would not be fun. You need a 4x4 high clearance vehicle and LOTS of water.... more than you might expect.
