Near Atlanta, GA

Anybody have any "secrets" you'd like to share ??
No more than 20 miles outside the outer loop.


First secret is Atlanta is a BIG spreadout city and suburbs and communities extend out 20-50 miles from the outer loop, with this demand, not many invested in securing land and building nice campgrounds.

Stone Mountain, is actually REALLY nice, with a lot of activities in the park, as well as easy access into “ATLANTA”, with still a woodsy camping experience. (a little pricey, but you get what you pay for).

State Parks are nice options in GA, Fort Yargo and/or Red Top Mountain, closer to Atlanta, nice options, will be out further than the 20 miles.

GA State Parks

Lake Lanier Islands, north of Atlanta up I-85/985, probably right at 25-30 miles north of outer loop – Okay, a little pricey, and last I saw the campground was let go…..Stone Mtn MUCH better.

The other Campgrounds that may hit the radar, most likely are not really campgrounds, more trailer parks, in the Atlanta area.

Jones RV Park is not in a desirable area. It is a very poor choice.

High Falls and Indian Springs are both State Parks just off I-75 just outside Metro Atlanta on the Southside. Dobbins Joint Reserve Base in Marietta has a small RV Park on base. Lots of RV parks, state parks, COE parks and military campgrounds around Lakes Lanier and Allatoona.

Probably not within your 20 miles beyond the I-285 loop, but the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers is a little known RV park.

We’ve been told by many of our visitors that the Georgia International Horse Park is one of the best kept secrets that they have found with regard to RV parks east of Atlanta. The GIHP offers a full-service RV park for the convenience of our guests. Fully equipped with water, electric and sewer service, these 140+ sites are located near the Stable Complex and the Walker Arena Complex. Full-service shower facilities are also located within the RV Park and their use is included in the daily RV site rental fee. Due to limited capacity, you must call in advance (770-860-4190) and reserve your space. GIHP office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5 p.m. We look forward to your visit!

You do not have to be associated with an event in their park to use their campground. We stayed here for a couple of nights several years ago. Nothing fancy, but full hook ups and very quiet.

Good option if you are at an event at the horse park.

Very basic, dirt lots, not woodsy......

Thanks to all who replied, even those who suggested things WAY outside of my limits. ;-)

It looks like Stone Mountain is going to be the best bet.

And yes, I know that Atlanta metro is built WAY out.....but once you get much past the "perimeter" most of the development is limited to the main arterial highways and you can turn off the main highway and be in the woods again in a mile or so in a lot of places.

Check out the CoE Parks on Allatoona Lake. Some will fall about 20 miles from I-285. Also Red Top Mountain SP.
