New KOA in Monument Valley

I just received the 2018 KOA Directory and see they have added a New campground on Rt 163 in Monument Valley. It wasn't listed in the 2017 directory. Was this a previously owned campground? Looks like a good spot.
  • Must be this one. Just opened last year and already a KOA.

    Monument Valley KOA

I've seen several older family run camps getting scooped up by KOA. This was new.
  • KOA doesnt "Scoop up" campgrounds. Few are company owned including this one.
  • Yes, most KOAs are independently owned and operated franchises (to meet KOA specs). Many of the owners live on the campground.

  • Whatever term you use, a campground is not the same after being KOA-ized. Some say better, some say worse, but most certainly more expensive.

Case in point, the subject CG.

    Last year's rate $40
    Sept this year $61

I doubt that they had to do anything to this brand new campground to justify a $20 a night increase.

We went to the Maddox Family CG in Chincoteague VA last year right after KOA took it over. The "renovations" were a mess, sewer pipes 2 feet out of the ground and above your tank drain if you were lucky. If not, it was buried when they did the backfill. We paid extra for the "view of the lighthouse" only to find out that they had flipped the site orientation and you had a "view of the cabins" 15 feet away.
  • With so many KOA owners leaving KOA it's interesting to see a new KOA.
  • Lots of folk think running a campground is EASY laid back. Until they have the responsibility and WORK that goes with it. JM2ยข YMMV
