Williamsburg Va becomes another possibility,Near the campgrounds are Busch Gardens and Water Country USA and the restored Colonial areas in both Williamsburg and Jamestown. You could even do a day trip over to Virginia Beach (40 miles)
And something you have not mentioned, but may make a better option is to leave your van at home, and on the couple of destinations that you want to wander away from your camp, rent a car from Enterprise to use on the couple of days that you want more maneuverability and yet you don't have to rent a dolly, or deal with towing, in many areas they will pick you up.
