Croton is a good place but you'll spend quite a bit of time traveling to NYC vs. Liberty harbor.
I'll be honest I wasn't tired doing the walk to the picnic grounds at Croton but again I wouldn't suggest it for a longer stay. Another nightime walking problem would be there are limited sidewalks (how I know I'm in "the country";))and even less street lights.
I think the Liberty vs Croton choice boils down to this: pay $95.00 daily for a short commute (10-15 minutes) and stay in a parking lot w/ some pretty views, power and electricity w/ dump station or stay in a spot more like a SP (Croton is run by the county) with an average daily rate of $45.00 and a 1 hour commute, still with hook up amenities.
Pretty well sums it up. I have been to both and enjoy both. However if your goal is mainly to tour and see the city I consider Liberty a better choice.
