We are planning for our first 3-month long snowbird trip this winter.We were discussing what to do (if anything) with the refrigerator while gone. We can transfer the freezer stuff to our chest freezer. Assuming we can get rid of everything in the refrigerator section are there any negatives to just unplugging it for the 3-month long trip and propping the door open?I don't know what the monthly cost is to run the average fridge/freezer and if it's worth it to go through the process.

We always empty the Fridge in Our Lake House. Unplug and leave the Doors open!Been doing this for over 10 Years with no problems!

Either way I'm sure would be fine for the refer. Not sure about the food itself. Stuff gets old.

I would clean it out, unplug and prop open. My sister went south for 6 weeks and their refrigerator/freezer went out on them while they were gone. Long story short, it was a stinky nasty mess to clean and it ruined their flooring. Better safe than sorry!

We try to use up our fridge stuff so what's left fits in the trailer fridge. Shut off the fridge and prop the door open. This will save on your electric bill and save you from a mess when you return. Last Winter our power was out for 5 days after a storm, glad we didn't have to worry about it.

I turn off the beer & drink fridge in the garage and leave the door open. The fridge in the kitchen stays running with basic stuff in it like condiments, jams etc... as well, there is stuff we leave in the fridge's freezer. The freezer in the basement also stays running.We are never away for more them 2 months or so at a time.

We empty the freezer in the fridge and leave just a few things in the fridge itself. The ice maker is shut off, as is the water to the whole house. We're gone 4-6 months but we're fortunate to have someone checking the house 2-3 times a week.
