Four Mile Creek State Park is hard to beat for cost, convenience (if you have a toad) and beauty. It's like on the shore of the lake, easy 15 minute drive almost traffic free to the Falls.
X2.
Many of the commercial campgrounds/motels around Niagara Falls are just concrete/gravel/asphalt pads, expensive and somehow out of place with the beauty of the surroundings.
http://www.nystateparkstours.com/fourmilecreek/You won't be far from Buffalo and if you like contemporary art, the Knox-Albright shouldn't be missed. I really wasn't a fan of current art until I went there and had my eyes opened. You can get an audio tour when you are admitted and if memory serves me right it's free.
The Anchor Bar, the originator of Buffalo wings. Weekends, they have live music. I'm going to go out on a limb (get it?:B) and say I prefer Duff's wings. The heresy hurts but it is what it is.
Have an interest in architecture? F.L. Wright's Darwin Martin House, is re-opened and I'm flying into the city to see it and some friends who moved there from Switzerland to teach at a local college. As an aside not sure how long they will stay since Buffalo is flat as a pancake but hope it's a while since I miss them:).
Great views of the water canal and smaller falls near and in Buffalo w/o the crowds.
Interested in wine then follow the Niagara Wine Trail where you can taste before buying at most locales. I'm partial to ice wine so this affection requires frequent stops along the way....
Great craft beers up that way so says the man; I'm still tippling on the ice wine so can't say from personal knowledge, LOL). Check the "I Love NY" website maintained by the state of NY for dates of beer festivals and tastings.
HTH and have fun.
