OBX Campfires

We noticing that some of the campgrounds in Rodanthe/Waves area do not allow woodburning campfires. What do some of of you do as an alternative?

I'm familiar with three of the Campgrounds. Camp Hattera, Cape Hatteras KOA, and Ocean Waves. Of those, only Ocean Waves does not allow wood burning fires. Camp Hatteras does not allow ground fires, but does allow the use of standing fire pits. Cape Hatteras KOA allows ground fires in a pit.

That said, sometimes the wind at all three campgrounds argues against any wood fires.

  • We have a propane powered "Little red campfire" for just such an event. They are (usually) classified as propane stoves and are allowed when an open pit fire ban is in effect.
  • Never been to a campground that prohibited campfires, except only once when there was a severe drought and there was a state wide fire ban.

We have a fire place at home and a fire pit (we can even open burn our trash where we live), so we have a lot of fires at home. So having a camp fire is no big deal for us. If we have one, we do. If we don't, it's no loss. When you have to clean up your own ashes, campfires and fireplaces are not so "thrilling" any more.

So, if we ended up in a campground that prohibited campfires, it would not affect us one way or the other.
