Ocean Lakes and other MB campgrounds

Good morning! We are headed to Myrtle Beach for 4th of July and have been able to get a last minute reservation at Ocean Lakes, but after doing some research and reading TONS of reviews, I am a little nervous about how busy and crazy it will be. I have 4 small kids (ranging from 8-2) and worry that it might not be the best time to visit that campground. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. For the most part we plan to relax and maybe throw a football on the beach, and my husband was hoping to do some fishing.

We originally had ressies at Huntington Beach, but it was a little further than we wanted to be and my husband wasn't crazy about the skeeters that friends of ours complained about. I am starting to wonder if this would have been a better choice for us for the little ones to just run free on the beach and play.

Thanks in advance!

Angela

  • Honestly. You should have a great time. Ocean Lakes is the most crowded, and, busiest MB CG. But IF you are back off the oceanfront. It is much quieter. The kids can ride, and play.

As for the football on the beach. Early morning, and later in the afternoon is best for playing games, and throwing things on the beach as the crowd thins.

Just bear in mind. OL, s well as the other MB CGs are resorts. Everything you need is inside the park, From pools, and HB stands, to minigolf. Which you will be sharing with 10,000 of your close friends. It's a world away from camping. This is truly RVing. And that is different from Mountain camping. Just relax, and enjoy the trip, and show.
  • We will not go to Ocean Lakes on any holiday weekend, after our experience on a Memorial Day weekend. Your biggest danger will be the golf carts driven by drunk adults, or young kids with NO driving experience. There is NO way I would take my grandchildren there on any holiday weekend.
  • Everyplace in Myrtle Beach will be packed. We are hosting at Huntington Beach State Park and they have no openings until the end of August.
  • Your kids will have a great time. Sure its busy but all the campground parks are busy and July 4th is the busiest week of the summer. If you are in the 3000 or 4000 section it will be much quieter. However, after 11pm it quiets down everywhere within the park. Our kids have been going with us since 7 and 3. They loved it then and now they are 10 and 6 and love it more and more.
  • In the south near the beach, marsh, underbrush you are going to get skeeters no matter what park. HBSP is a great state park and quite frankly would have been my choice. However, Ocean Lakes has more kid things to do. But if you expect the place to be packed you will not be dissapointed.
