Ohiopyle State Park?

We are thinking of hitting Laurel Caverns and doing some rafting/tubing etc.. Ohiopyle state park seems to be in the center of the action. Has anyone been to it? good/bad? Any recommendations on sites? We have a 35ft fiver and need an electric site.
  • It's steep. We ended up at Hickory Hills and then driving over to the park. That area is very hilly. The problem we had with the coe in Confluence was there is usually no sites available, and they looked pretty worn out to us.
  • The COE park in Confluence is pretty nice. Right at the base of the Yough damn, but it only has 1 ring of electric sites and sometimes it is hard to get a site unless you book far out. (been my experience anyhow)
  • Been there. Most sites are smallish however we did manage to squeeze our near 36' of 5er into a site. The limit says 30'. The gate people said if you can find a site, go for it. I think we had the back of the 5er hanging out into space, too high to use the stabilizers.
  • Go to PA parks website:PA Parks Once there click on "I know my park", then find Ohiopyle on the list. You can select your preferences from there. When a list of available campsites comes up you can look at photos of each site. I didn't mean to scare you away from Ohiopyle, it may work very well for you and your preferences.
  • We spent a couple nights in Ohiopyle State Park and then moved to a COE campground in nearby Confluence. A nice flat park, large sites. Ohiopyle was in the woods, tight sites (a 33ft 5th wheel) and a rather steep, twisty road to get up and down, in and out of park. We really enjoyed the COE park, as well as bike riding on the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail, including between Ohiopyle and Confluence.
  • Hmm now a little worried from the one post of the sites being small. I dont mind electric only as long as I can fill my water tank. Does anyone else think the sites are too small and close together?

I have lived within30 minutes of Ohiopyle my whole life. We go there at least 5 times a summer. It is awesome. I would stay at the state park which is just a small walk to the center of town. In town you will find rafting, biking "rails to trails". There is also hiking to Cucumer Falls, you have to do. Beautiful... But the by far best thing to do are the "natural water slides". Water slides carved out of the bedrock. It really is a wonderful place.

This has been our experience, my wife grew up in the area. We go about once every two years.

We stay at Benners Campground. It's well run with full hook up sites, pool, store, etc. I've been told there is a great COE park not too far from the park with water and electric only and a dump station.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are close too.

Also visited Fort Necessity where Colonel George Washington surrendered to the French. Lots to do! Enjoy!
  • Ohiopyle State Park Campground is okay but with your rig you may want to choose one of the private campgrounds in the area. Ohiopyle is basic with electric only and the sites aren't very big. If you do plan on camping there you will have to come in from the US40 side because the road from Ohiopyle to the campground is very steep and winding. Otherwise there would be a 16 mile road detour to take to get the one mile to the top of the mountain.

Go here:Find campgrounds and type in Farmington, PA and a list of campgrounds will come up.

You may want to go biking on The Great Allegheny Passage: Allegheny Passage
