Open campgrounds heading south in February

We are taking our first winter trip south ffrom Michigan to Florida next week. Traveling south on I - 65 will we find places to camp overnight on the way down? We don't want to stay in a motel with the MH out in the parking lot to be sure. Any advice or insight on what we should expect? Thanks!

  • x2 on Deer Run...we stopped there on our way down and plan to make it an annual stop on the way. Plus taking that route avoided mountain travel and Atlanta traffic.

What day you leaving, maybe we'll follow you. We've taken I-77 and I-75 before, this will be our first trip on I-69. In the little research we did so far we found campgrounds open year round around Indianapolis, Louisville and south. If you have an Android phone or tablet try the app RVParky. You'll need internet access but it will show the campgrounds along your route. You can get some basic info and the phone #.
  • We've stopped at Deer Run Campground just north of Troy, AL along US231. It's a FHU campground with cable. All sites have a cement pad and if you have a Good Sam card the cost is only about $27/night. Nice people run it and, in fact, the owners used to live in Michigan.
  • We stayed in KOA in Louisville Ky last year. Open all year, really a nice place.
  • What part of Florida are you coming to? If it is the Daytona area, most of the parks in a wide area may be full due to the upcoming Daytona 500 race.
  • We only stop for one night. we make the stay at Grandma's RV Campground Shepherdsville KY Exit 116
  • We stop once (don't have extra time to get there) Here.

30mi north of the AL state line in TN
  • We go down every year right after Christmas. We have found the following route to be fast, no large hills, less truck traffic, and a pleasant drive. We go to Tampa from SE Michigan.

    I96 to I69 at Lansing,MI
    I69 to I65 at Indianapolis,IN
    I65 to US231 at Montgomery,AL
    US231 to US84 at Dothan,AL
    US84 to US19 at Thomasville,GA
    US19 to US98 just south of Homosassa,FL
US98 to Suncoast Parkway (FL589)(toll road) into Tampa

We usually take three nights to get there.

We overnight in campgrounds at Columbus Woods and Waters campground just S of Indianapolis the first night. They have the water turned off but have a nice clean restroom/shower facility that is heated and open. They are also a GS campground if you are a member.

Point Mallard Campground in Decatur AL the 2nd night.(just South of the Tenn state line) Also gives GS discount if I remember correctly.

SugarMill Plantation RV Park in Thomasville,GA the third night. (where US84 runs into US19 )
This gets us into Tampa in early afternoon on the 4th day.

An option is to continue on US231 at Dothan,AL to I10 and take that across Florida.
