Overnight between Terrell TX and Amarillo

We are planning on heading from Terrell TX to Amarillo on US287. I am looking for an overnight stop about half way between the two. We will be travelling on a Sunday.

I really don't know what to expect--busy road? Mapquest says 6 1/2 hours between Terrell and Amarillo. A stopover about 4 hours from Terrell would be good. I don't see too much on Woodalls.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Judi
  • US 287 is a fairly busy road, with a lot of truck traffic. And a lot of small town speed traps. Wichita Falls would be a good halfway point out of Ft.Worth. Either there or Vernon.

There are many inexpensive motels and areas to park if using your RV.

    Have a safe trip.Bob
  • there is a real nice rest stop near Quannah.
or, the Flying J at Wichita Falls is pretty good.
  • We take that route every summer heading to Colorado. Very good highway and not really much traffic. But no notable RV parks past Wichita Falls. Best Western Childress has a few RV sites behind the hotel. A few other small ones along the way. Check rvparkreviews.com for each of the towns of any size. We just go on up to Amarillo before stopping.
Really nice rest areas east of Quanah and another a little west of Childress if you do not need hookups.
  • Didn't stay here, but used the dump station, Wichita Bend RV Park would make a nice overnight site or longer. Price has risen it seems, $17 per day. http://www.freecampgrounds.com

We did a few overnights at the Walmart Supercenter @ 5131 Greenbriar Rd.

There are two other Walmarts as well. We went over to see our son when he was in Tech. School at the AFB.

There is a Walmart Supercenter in Vernon as well.
    3800 Us Highway 287 W - 940-552-8029

    Also in Childress: Walmart Supercenter.
    2211 Avenue F Northwest - 940-937-6166

    Childress City Park

For perhaps a neat experience, Copper Breaks State Park near Quanah sounds pretty cool.

If time for more than an overnight, Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway would make a neat place to check out. One I would like to see.
  • Cracker Barrel Wichita Falls: I-44 , Exit# 3C 2400 Sierra Drive Wichita Falls, TX
or Wichita Falls RV Park (basic park, cheaper rates)
or the new RV park Coyote Ranch. (fancier, nice park)
Flying J 2311 Jacksboro Highway (US287) Wichita Falls
  • We have stayed at Old Cotton Gin RV park just west of Wichita Falls a couple of times. Level sites, continental breakfast, reasonable rates. I think it is in Goodlett, TX. I think you will be pleased...Have a safe trip.
  • Thank you all for the responses. Right now, we are thinking that we will leave Terrell early in the AM and drive directly to Amarillo. It will be a long day but we have done long ones before--just don't like to--

We have reservations at Sugarite Canyon State Park in NM so Amarillo will be easier. Thanks again.
