Paynes Prairie State Park Perserve Florida Review

We visited Paynes Prairie State Preserve located between Gainesville and Ocala Florida, The park is right off I-75 making it a easy place to get to.

Here is my write-up on our visit including lots of pictures and some pictures of camping sites.

Paynes Prairie State Preserve Review.

I hope this helps others in checking out some of the great Florida State parks.

Thanks,
Terry
  • When your coming in with the boom box blaring and beer bottles slapping your feet, you might look like a local. :B
  • Well we were down there to take my son to the State Games and weren't in the park very much. I do recall that they read us the riot act about not being caught swimming in the river. It was off limits because of high bacterial counts IIRC. I don't know if that's a normal condition or not.

"Wow. I could have written same review about Hillsborough River State Park and their rangers.

I stayed at Payne a number of times and did not experience that. I also have stayed at Hillsborough a number of times and experienced it every time! (I won't stay there any more.) "

LOL, we have had the opposite experience. One stay at Hillsbourgh and nothing memorable about the rangers.

That really is remarkable. With Hillsborough they were rude from check-in on. (More than one stay) They read and listed every rule as if we were children.

In their zeal they did not notice our state park pass we earned as campground hosts with the Florida State Park System for over 500 hours of service.

I would offer a guess that we knew the rules better than they did. As is the case with most campground hosts, we did more rule enforcement in a park in a week than the typical ranger does in a month.

A couple of years ago that park had a serious tick problem on one of the trails, we haven't been there recently so hopefully that's been cleared up. They also had park rangers with the worst attitude of any Florida parks that we have ever stayed at. And that's a lot of parks. But hopefully that's gotten better too. They gave my coworker a ticket when he was riding his bicycle (for not coming to a complete stop and putting his foot down at a stop sign) for example and gave us a hard time when we checked in once. It's a local park for me.
