Place to stay Route 301 in Deleware

Looking for an overnight on 301 south toward Annapolis. Any thoughts?
  • Haven't been that way in a few years, but unless there is something new down that way, I would be very cautious and try not to plan on any overnight stops that way.
  • Lums Pond State Park is right off of Rt 301 in Bear, DE. I have never stayed there, but electric sites are $25/night for winter rates.
  • In Middletown,DE there is a Wal-Mart on 301 they might allow overnight parking. About 40 miles south on 301 is a welcome center rest stop. Across from that building is a large parking area for large vehicles.
  • Once past Lums Pond, there is nothing other than a couple of Wal Marts and a Cracker Barrel in Stevensville. The rest stop mentioned above closes at night I believe.
  • How about further North on NJ Tpk.? Molly pitcher rest area would work. Any thoughts about that move.
  • A little further south on US 301 is Louise F. Cosca County Park in Clinton, MD, just south of Andrews AFB. We have never stayed there so I can't attest to what it's like. It does have electric hookups for $23.

  • Lums State Park campground is closed this winter for repairs. We usually stay there in passing. South of there but off 301 is Trap Pond State Park. Nice park but it isn't near anything. Don't like to do that in the dark on local roads but do-able. Note that campground is not on the same side of the lake as the water park.

Winter and East Coast and Campgrounds are a strange mix?

Where are we headed? What is the route? We just trying to stop and sleep?

Just trying to understand the mission?

    AllStays Wal*Mart

IMHO, we have always found the Wal*Mart as the Good alternative - they have security - Lights -and are usually close to the Highway.

Having traveled the Rt 301 corridor often over the years - Wal*Mart has always been the best option for the night. Some people hate them others(us) love them, Other than Lums, not a lot of options.

    BOL,
  • Further south off I-95 after you get off the beltway is Pohick County Park in Lorton, VA. We use it in the fall for a stopover. It is pricey for non residence but a nice quiet park in the spring and winter. Have full hookups or electric. Some sites are not level and it is hard to get sat. TV in all the trees. Have always treated us well.
