Port San Luis (Avila Beach) changes coming

Update on camping at Port San Luis (in California's San Luis Obispo County, near Avila Beach):

A San Luis Obispo Tribune article states that plans for a new campground at Harbor Terrace have been approved. This plan includes doing away with the current roadside camping areas at Port San Luis. Changes are expected to be effective by 2017.

  • From the article: “It will include 58 low-cost campsites that will be priced comparably to the camping fees used by the State Parks Department.”

"Low-cost" means different things to different people; since Avila/Port San Luis is a BEACH area, I think one can expect the "low cost" campground fees at this new "campground", even for dry sites, to be on a par with the CA state park system is charging right now for "beach parks", and very probably even more than Port San Luis is currently charging for the "wide spot in the road" camping that is there now. Check the prices on this state park fees site for beach park site prices:

With a few exceptions, CA state parks are generally *very* overpriced, marginally maintained, and offer limited facilities. :(
  • That's great. Only in California where you have requirements for creating affordable housing, but also affordable camping. :B
