Poultry ban

I doubt there are very many Canadians still down south. BUT if you plan on buying any poultry before you return to Canada it will be confiscated. I know this as they took over $25 worth of Costco chicken breasts from me yesterday. All of this due to an outbreak of avian flu in US chickens. At first it was only when you passed through a few states. Now it is a lot of the crossings. Eggs, turkey and chicken are affected. Fresh or frozen. I was told that cooked is OK . I am now stuck with paying ridiculous prices to support the protectionist Chicken Marketing Boards!

So how much more was the same chicken in Canada?

For us in the Montreal area it's 50% to 75% higher.

Must be a regional thing. Bought several pounds of chicken yesterday in Plattsburgh, NY and no problem at the border. We even told the agent what we had.

  • Wow, that is interesting news.

I wonder if you could have crossed back into the US, then cooked the chicken, and then returned a few hours later? Baking it would only take a hour or so.

  • Two bird flu strains have been discovered in the United States this year. The H5N2 strain is in Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin. It has also been identified on farms in Ontario, Canada.

The H5N8 strain has been identified in California and also in Idaho, U.S. Department of Agriculture data showed.

In Minnesota alone 2.6 million birds infected.

Iowa, the top U.S. egg-producing state, said on Monday that a lethal strain of bird flu had been found in hens at an egg-laying facility near the city of Harris run by Sunrise Farms. The company said the facility houses 3.8 million hens.

On Tuesday, Mexico, the biggest buyer of U.S. chicken, halted imports of live birds and eggs from Iowa.

Price of chicken/turkey and eggs will go way up this year.
  • Which border crossing? There are several poultry farms in S.W. Ontario under quarantine at the current time due to avian flu.
