My two twin boys (six years old) are surprisingly interested in the history of the Presidents. I am thinking of shaping our upcoming travels this fall and next spring and summer around some Presidential sightseeing.I am from NJ and Gettysburg and Monticello are at the top of the list--and we are seriously considering Mount Rushmore next summer. But what else?I am looking for some great recommendations for other Presidential sightseeing options that also have good campgrounds and RV Parks nearby. Any thoughts or opinions would be so appreciated!Best--Jeremy

Right down the road from Monticello is Ash Lawn-Highland, home of James Monroe. Not as impressive maybe as Monticello but worth seeing in its own right. Mt. Vernon - yes!In Lancaster PA is Wheatland, home of James Buchanan (not one of our better presidents.....)In Lynchburg, VA is Poplar Forest. Thomas Jefferson's summer home.In New York are Hyde Park, home of FDR and Sagamore Hill, home of Teddy Roosevelt.If you do in fact head out to Rushmore, that opens up many more possibilities, such as Truman's home in Independence, MO.

When you go to Monticello, plan to stay at the KOA, Charlottesville. It's the best campground around, expensive, but nice. Book early, though. They fill up any time there is an event, including ball games, etc.Dale

When you go to Gettysburg, consider going a little farther west to
Mercersburg, PA, it is south west of Chambersburg, PA.
Visit Buchanan Birthplace State Park. There's a monument where the cabin stood in which Buchanan was born.

It's a tiny park and, nothing to see, other than the monument. But, it's part of American Presidential History.

It's located just outside Mercersburg, which is about 10 miles west of I-81.

if you go to mt rushmore be sure to go to rapid city and walk the president trail. life size bronze statues of every president on each street corner. very unique.lots of presidents come from the west and have home museums.

Forget Mt. Rushmore. It is a tourist trap. Nothing to see but a zillion other tourists pushing and shoving, Oh, you can see 4 presidents head blasted into the other wise most majestic peak of the Black Hills. By the way, the carving (or is it graffiti) was never finished!

Check out Journey Through Hallowed Ground. I has 9 Presidential homes or sites and lots of Civil War sites.

X2 on the Truman home. I also enjoyed the Eisenhower place in Kansas, and the LBJ ranch.
