Progresso shootout

http://www.krgv.com/news/nuevo-progreso-on-alert-after-shootouts/
There is quite a bit going on in the valley. Google RGV News. Our park is very close to the border but we still plan on going down. Just not sure how long we will stay.
  • The shootout was not in Nuevo-Progreso, it was on the road between Matamoras and Reynosa. Nuevo-Progreso was the town closest so that was reported as the location. We had neighbors there the day it happened and they said all was quiet in town.

If you google & read all the reports and watch the news video you will find otherwise.

Interesting, I just reviewed the supplied link of the OP and I guess I'm hearing something different. That's the reason for the :h.

I thought it said six dead in Nuevo, or is my hearing getting that bad.

They were gang members not rvers. Good. Violence in the state of Tamaulipas has decreased dramatically.

    Baja La Violencia En Tamaulipas

The problem is the same thing as a border agent told me a couple of years ago. When two opposing gangs see each other, violence erupts. The trick is not to be standing in-between them when it happens. Needless to say he was sending me a message without saying the words.

We went to Nuevo Progresso for the first time last winter. Enjoyed ourselves, the locals, and the other winter Texans that were there having fun and felt as safe as a person could given the state of the local economy and the policing of the area.

IMO Nuevo Progresso is the new Matamoros when it comes to snowbirds. My snowbird Uncles and Aunts would go to Matamoros and have a lot of fun, a couple years ago current snowbirds would go there, but come back prior to noon. Now very few snowbirds will venture there regardless of the time of day or the number of people in the group.

A gentleman on the plane sitting next to me this last winter told me that he feels safer in Nuevo Progresso now then 15 years ago. His belief is it was the Mexican Las Vegas for laundering local drug money. Everyone knew not to mess around because there would be a higher person to answer to. In many ways I hope that gentleman was right. I would much rather have it go that way, then the way Matamoros is going.
  • We have been going to Nuevo Progresso 20-30 times a year for the last ten years. I sure hope we don't lose it.
  • would you avoid LA because of the shooting rampage there a few weeks back?

    perspective, folks
  • The problem is that Nuevo Progresso, as a tourist town, lives or dies according to the perception of the Winter Texans. I already know some who have quit going there for fear "something" might happen. Once that becomes the majority attitude, they might as well close the bridge as far as tourist traffic. That does not mean that they should, but perception becomes reality when enough people believe it. I urge all my friends to keep going across the border and try to lead by example. You may find this hard to believe, but there are a lot of fearful folks in the world today. Yes, I avoid some parts of all major cities, including LA.
  • We will continue to go. Similar incidents occur in the USA regularly. Incidents thus far in Nuevo Progress very rarely. Twice in the ten years we have been going there. Besides our favorite dentist is there.
