PSA Dahlonega GA

Just returned from our Christmas trip through Georgia (we have relatives and friends in Monticello, McDonough and Dahlonega.) Stopped in a number of our favorite places including Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming. Yep the whole box was devoured by elves in less than 30 minutes.

Now for the PSA on Dahlonega from our friends:

Near the Dahlonega historic square there is very little parking on narrow one-way streets. It's strongly recommended that you DO NOT DRIVE OR PARK YOUR RV in downtown Dahlonega.

There have been problems with RVs unable to make the tight turns and hitting cars or getting stuck with no room to maneuver because of those tiny one-way streets. Also parking tickets are being given out for rigs that take up more than one parking spot in the downtown area.

There is rig parking in an older shopping center just off their parkway on East Main St. and then there's parking east of town at the Walmart on the parkway. Use your toad to go into the downtown area if you can't walk that short distance.

    Parking at a shopping center or Walmart and then go shop and browse somewhere else doesn’t sound fair to those businesses at the shopping center or Walmart.

    While I agree with Lwiddis to some extent, use your best judgement on parking in a lot where you won't be visiting the businesses. If there's more than adequate parking and you aren't gone too long it shouldn't bring any harm to the business.

    The Walmart in Dahlonega doesn't mind and neither does the older shopping center. Both have groceries and supplies you can't get in the historic downtown. Both have plenty of parking. Both know you're likely to shop their stores on the way back to your rig. Parking your RV there is fine with them as long as you don't spend the night there.

    It's common sense actually. Driving your RV in the historic downtown narrow, one-way streets is a hazard even if you're a pro at driving. Taking up more than one parking spot in a historic district isn't courteous. The advice of our friends: If you wreck or cause damage you'll be ticketed. If you're parked wrong you'll be ticketed. Go park in the old shopping center or Walmart.

    Squeezing through narrow one way streets isn't smart with RVs. They've had too many RVers causing problems there.

    Just. Don't. Do it.

    Many of the small towns in Georgia are County Seats still maintaining their turn of the century square anchored by their Courthouse. They refuse to destroy their history to make a parking lot. Those wanting to visit should use something like Google earth to find a off grid parking area or visit without the camper.
