I think OP comes under the Family definition.. I don't think OP would be in violation of the rule...
I agree and think the talk of cheating is a bit dramatic. Somehow I think that the park service is going to be OK if a family brings their 75 year old grandma or grandpa on a trip to Yellowstone with them. The rule is obviously to prevent the cheap and/or partyers.
As the rule specifies the "one family" as an exception to the 6 person max, they obviously have dealt with this question before.
