Very good write-up. We've been there several times and are planning a much longer stay next year.
A few things you missed:
1) There are also areas outside of the LTVA areas that you can stay for free. However, you can't use the dump stations, dumpsters or get water. BUT, you CAN run into town to various locations (#1 being the Pit Stop) get water and dump your tanks for a price. You can also use the Garbage Transfer Station north of town for free. We feel it will end up costing as much as if you paid the $40.
#2) The rock collecting and hiking!!!!! Most anywhere you camp in Quartzsite area, you will find rocks. If you're a rockhounder, it's 7th heaven...almost. This last year we camped in LaPosa South and found clear crystal quartz all around. We LOVE to camp in LaPosa West and spend our time hiking up into the hills. Nice rocks to be found there, too.
#3) The vendors.....okay, so we bought lots of stuff we didn't need, however it WAS necessary to visit Big Al's and Sal's....for homemade root beer floats. I said it was a necessity --- that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :B
