I'm also wondering why there are not more Hydro Electric plants in operation?
We have lots of dams, thusly lots of water being released, we seem to need the fresh water for various things. During the last few years when we've had drought in large portions of the USA, there hasn't been enough water storage facilities, but I haven't heard much about any other power plants being built except adds for 'clean coal' plants. I'm happy to hear of solar and wind technologies, being developed.
I guess my real question is; How is it that we can use large tracts of land that were/are to remain undeveloped for solar and wind. But seem incapable of retrofitting existing dams with hydro electric units? Are COE dams sacrosanct (used for flood control), to the exclusion of useful power generation?
