Some of the sites in loop A at North are quite large (more than the 45' listed). If you aren't arriving on a weekend, you might have a chance to snag one of the larger ones.
As for it being busy last weekend, all of the parks in Utah were. Last weekend was the Utah Teachers Convention so the school districts all had at least Thursday and Friday off. Some also gave the kids Wednesday off. So families had a four or five day weekend. We've learned not to head to Utah on that weekend - it's a zoo everywhere. Next week shouldn't be nearly as busy.
