Question About "Walk-up" Camp Sites

Hello,
Camping experience with a full size RV = Low, camping with a small pop-up/tent at basic sites that I can use my small quite generator = Moderate/High. I've never had a problem finding a non-electric/water site at larger developed campgrounds which leads me to my questions(s).

I now have a bigger TT and trying to find an electric/water campsite at a couple of places (none available) and I understand that Labor Day weekend is a busy time, so I've made a reservation for an available basic site that can accommodate up to 40 ft trailer based upon the description. This is my primary plan and not having water and A/C is survivable for me...

I noticed that there are a number of "reserve-able on-site only" sites. Am I wrong to think that if I show up and ask for what's available with a 30A service and water as a "walk-up" I won't be laughed at and it might actually work out? Or is there a secret to this and I just better plan on running my Honda 2000 and have the family give my the stink eye all weekend?

Thank you.

  • You might also check what their cancellation policy is for the site you already have. I've seen some places that go strictly by the book, meaning if you have reservation for spot 33B tonight and you show up and take one of their walk is spots with water and power, they'll ding you because you didn't cancel your reservation 24 hours in advance. It probably won't happen, but you should ask.

  • It probably will depend on how soon before the weekend that you will arrive. I would say maybe Wednesday or Thursday at least. But not sure...depends on the popularity of the campground.

Also, keep checking because often people will cancel a couple of days before so there may be some availability. But maybe not.

    Good luck and safe travels!
