The bill was passed by Congress in Washington, but the supervisor of Tonto National Forest controls the camping areas and recreational access.
If we want to be able to camp on the public land on the Salt River, the Tonto National Forest supervisor is the one with the authority to open or close the gates to the areas that were built by his predecessors.
The irony is that he claims that Tonto National Forest is too broke to maintain these areas, so he closed them.
Yet there was a potential for millions of dollars of pure profit to be made from the copper under the forest. It could have financed not only the existing recreational areas -- in style -- but could have built far more.
And the demand for inexpensive camping is very high, as noted by the overcrowding that existed last year in the (now closed) Phon D Sutton recreation area.
