It's a reasonable assumption on the campground's part that by the morning if the people have not shown up that they are not coming as they have not heard otherwise and the last correspondence indicated they would be there.

Yes, business is indeed business. While I feel for the OP's plight this ENTIRE thread would be moot if s/he had taken an additional 30 seconds to make one more phone call asking for the site to be held. No offense to the OP intended but if every campground caves to every sob story they'd go out of business.

So if the OP would have made one more phone call, who would have answered as they stated only open till 9:30? The first issue was reported to them at 8 pm. And if the deposit covered one night, that means from check in time to check out time. The OP called at 9:30 am. I doubt you need to be checked out before then. I don't think that is unreasonable at all. I'll check with the CG to see when check out time is if it makes anyone feel better, but I've never experienced, a check out time before 11am - and as late as 1 pm.

They could have held the site til check out time - the OP called before check out time, but instead the first order of business was to give the spot away and have a crabby attitude about it. It's a cr@ppy move on the part of the CG - plain and simple.
