Reno to Ely NV Highway 50 The loneliest road

We have a 36 foot 5er. Is there any overnight dry camping sites between Middlegate Station and Ely?

  • I did a search on Campendium for Austin, NV, halfway between and found several areas: Austin Nevada on Campendium

If you Zoom out, you'll see more options between the two towns, including rest areas that are huge and look to allow overnight camping.

You may have to add an account, but it's free.

I have driven that highway many times but has been a 5 to 6 years since last trip. I do not recall Middleton Station but all along the highway there are pullout areas for hwy work crews to store gravel piles and other pull out areas created by truckers for rest stops. I have used these many times without hassle from anyone and only on one or two occasions did I see a sign not allowing overnight parking and this was not hwy 50.

I found these areas before hand easy by using Google overhead satellite view and zooming down to area of interest. Time consuming but fun for me

Yep. If you can, pull behind the pile to block noise.

  • Several gravel pit areas. Most are on top of hills you will go over.
Watch your fuel!~ Hills eat it up!
