We have a 5th wheel. We like to stay within an hours driving distance if possible.
We did a route this summer (June and July) that took us across I40 from KY to Las Vegas and then some parts of it going back. We never made one reservation and we never hit a campground that was full. Planed the day of travel and places to stay the night before departure and called the campground, for that night, at a noon-time break for lunch.
What are you traveling in and do you have a toad with you? Are you willing to stay at campgrounds a short distance outside any parks you want to visit? - BusskipperExplorer

Be traveling mid September to mid October. Do you believe we will need reservations along the way and at the Grand Canyon. Willing to stay in public or private parks.
See if your adventure can include Canyon de Chelly - Images - I'd also try for a little Aspen Leaf Peeping into Colorado in late September - Leaves - Both would be rewarding :)
Reservation are needed at the Grand Canyon.
Along the way you should be fine just getting them a few hours before you arrive. https://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/
Best of Luck, - PadlinExplorerWe made the same trip a few years ago starting in TN. As long as you avoid Labor Day and are careful for Columbus day weekend you should be ok. We got stuck at a WM on Labor Day's Saturday night.
We travel early, hitting the road around 7 or so, and pull in early afternoons before most others start looking. Call a bit ahead to verify availability.
All bets are off when you hit touristy areas like The Grand Canyon. Personally I'd have reservations for those spots. - phil-tExplorerWe did a route this summer (June and July) that took us across I40 from KY to Las Vegas and then some parts of it going back. State Parks, Commercial parks, and Casinos with cheap RV slots along I-40 are pretty plentiful although not many resort type places. I would stop before or after Albuquerque unless you have some sight you want to see there.
