Although many do w/o a problem, I'd be very cautious about using WM lots at night just due to cast of characters at night going in/out.
This is exactly my answer to people who are shocked that I regularly sleep in rest areas.
I had one such exchange just earlier this month, a fellow I know who was taking the same route I was taking pulled into a rest area in the wee hours of the morning (I had left quite a few hours earlier) spotted my rig in the parking area.
Later he asked about it, he was shocked I had spent the night there, he had obviously drank the Kool-Aid, “Aren’t you afraid of being robbed? Do you know how long it would take for the cops to show up?”.
My reply was something like “Robbed? By somebody with a car and enough time and gas money to get that far out of town just to take the chance, with other cars coming in at 65mph with no notice, that there might be somebody there to rob? No, the two-bit crooks are all hanging out in town at the Wall-World parking lot.”
The shocked look on his face was priceless as what I’d said sunk in.
On the way home we ran in tandem, and we both slept in a rest area, in the morning he had to admit he’d had a much more peaceful night than he’d ever had in a WM parking lot.
