RE:Traveling Through TX

We are leaving Casa Grande AZ and touring through TX. Our route includes going through El Paso, San Antonio, south towards Donna and up the Gulf area. We are traveling with a 5th wheel. We plan on being in TX for 2-3 weeks. I would appreciate any suggestions on Camping facilities. We are open to both Public and Private, Boondocking to Resorts. Thanks in advance from the "TRAVEL'N2SOME".
  • Padre Island National Seashore (south of Corpus Christi) $14 per night, $7 for seniors,

Mustang Island, Mustang Island State Park, and a bunch of private parks, all on the beach. Use the ferry at Port Arthur to head north-east towards Houston

Matagorda Island - a Lower Colorado River Authority park. exceptionally nice, lots are triple size most places with full hook ups. nice beach and fishing.

If you like the bright lights then Galveston is the place to go, try Jamaica Beach rv park or the City rv park

Recommendation - use google earth to scout out the area.
  • One stop you should not miss is the cattlemen steak house at Fabiens tx. Fabien is about 20 miles east of elpaso. The cattlemen is 5 miles north of the Fabien exit. It is a working ranch, cuts their own meat every day, a location for lots of movies, is very large needing no reservations, and has an RV parking area to boon dock overnight for no charge. A parking attendent, who may be on horseback, is on duty to direct parking from about 5 pm on. Steaks are exceptional, not cheap by any means, and off set by the cost of staying overnight. I and many others just plan on a stop when traveling I-10.
  • You can't go wrong with the Texas state parks.

A few places we enjoy are Fredericksburg, Fort Davis, Big Bend, Rockport. We don't care for the big cities.
  • I'll just pick up on the suggestion to stop by Fredericksburg. There are several good choices of campgrounds. We usually stay at the KOA just east of the city. This is one KOA I can recommend. Obviously we prefer it to any other campground in Fredericksburg.

If you are coming down I-10 from Casa Grande, you would turn east on US 290 to take you straight into Fredericksburg. We will be going there next month, though we may be a bit late for the bluebonnets.

You can then drop down quite easily to San Antonio, either through Comfort, TX or Boerne, TX--the latter will take you through Luckenbach.

Just off US 281 south of San Antonio, we often stay at Choke Canyon State Park, Calliham Unit. On a lake with wildlife often seen in the campground.

And that would put you in Donna the next day with an easy trip.
  • The better on-the-beach CG in Galveston is the state park around 13 mile road. Be sure to be on the gulf side not the bay side.
  • When we leave Casa Grande we usually travel to the gulf coast spending time ON THE BEACH on the Bolivar Peninsula a free ferry ride from Galveston.
We then travel back roads to Holly Beach, LA for more time ON THE BEACH.
If you are interested in either PM me
Enroute we overnight at Flying J in El Paso.

Rest area near Fredericksburg, then go into Fredericksburg for some great German food.
