Rio Grande Valley

We are planning the "grand tour" and will be leaving Washington end of November and then going thru California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. We love to bird and love the Rio Grande Valley, but as its a snowbird area, are there any places to camp for just a week or so, or are most places filled. Suspect we will be there late Feb or early March.

Several were Mexico natives that had wandered north
I suppose some of them are good birds :R
  • If you are a birder and are going to South Texas from New Mexico via I-10, try to spend a night or two just off I-10 at South Llano River State Park in Junction. The campground is near the river and shaded by oaks and pecans. A short walk from the campground is a bird blind with running water and an assortment of feeders. We saw more than a dozen species at the blind, some of which we had not seen previously. Several were Mexico natives that had wandered north when we were there in mid-winter.

PS--Are you planning to stop at Bosque del Apache when you are going through New Mexico? The cranes and snow geese will be there by the time you are there, so don't miss the dawn flyout. It is spectacular!
  • WE have been wintering in Mission, Texas, for several years. You won't have a problem finding a place. It's popular here, but there are a lot of parks and all price ranges as well. It's a reasonably inexpensive place to stay. There is a national birding center located here in what used to be Bentsen state park. Also a butterfly center which is pretty cool. Lots of parks nearby. . . Mission West comes to mind as being a good park for transients, but there are many others. You can always get a spot there and they have lots of activities. Come stay for a few days, scout around at other parks in the area. We are still 90 miles from Brownsville, so there are hundreds of parks from here to the ocean.

  • If you need a spot on the way to RGV there is a state park in Laredo. Out by the airport, next to a lake. Lake Casa Blanca International State Park.
  • Birders love the Texas State Parks along the Valley. Usually no problem getting a spot for a night or week.
  • We never had a problem finding a spot for a day, week, or month. There are RV parks all over the area. If you are not looking for resorts the options are much greater. BTW: Sierra Vista, AZ is a good birding area.
