Rochelle, IL

Hi Everyone,

We'll be visiting friends in Rochelle, Illinois from Oct 22-24. Because we have two dogs, we'd like to take the Winnebago and camp somewhere close to the city. Can anyone recommend a place near Rochelle? I don't know of any campgrounds in the area and if there are some, perhaps they would be closed for the season anyway.

We just need a place to park where can we can use the generator occasionally. I've heard the airport has camping for the skydivers. Does anyone know if it is available for others to use? Or, is there a fairgrounds or open space nearby where we could park for two nights?

Are any of you railfans that have driven down to Rochelle to watch the trains? If so, where did you camp?

Thanks for any help you can give us.

Tracy
  • There are a few in Amboy IL and Shabona Lake state park. And Blackhawk Valley campground in Rockford. All are within 20-30 minutes from Rochelle.
  • Tracy,

The rumors are true about the skydiving center. They are even listed in Harvest Hosts. It does not look like they have much past a parking lot and an restaurant, so if you can't get by self contained, that may be an issue. You may have to join Harvest Hosts to get in there, but it is available.

  • We have parked for a few days to visit family at the Rochelle , Il . sky diving center in nov. '17. Full hookups, self serve. Its not well marked and easy to miss the entrance, but there is a truck repair, service place with u turn room just past.
Recommend a call ahead to confirm availability and a look on google earth and maps to find it first try.
Its called Chicagoland Sky diving Center. Good dog walking room, big parking lot if you have to dry camp. Recommend you patronize the restaurant
  • Lowden State Park is also nearby. Electric hookups at some sites. Reservations a must in state parks, especially on weekends.
  • Thanks for the great suggestions. We'll check them all out. We have a few months to figure this out, so I'm sure one of them will work. Thanks again for taking the time to help us.

  • If you are a train freak, you will love the busiest train intersection in the state -- in Rochelle. Picnic tables, small gift shop, and a train a minute!
