route info (I15 thru Salt Lake to Vegas or 86 - 93 - Vegas)

So we have taken I15 from Sask thru Salt Lake to Vegas many times but this year we are forced to leave Jan 1 - so it will be snow etc through most all of I15 (even most of Utah from what I remember) I see that I can turn off I15 around Pocatello then take 86 - 93 - Vegas. Is this route less snow / chance of ice etc? Better winter driving? or should we just take the tried and known - it adds only an hour (via google ...)
thanks

  • I agree with the Texan. And it has been our experience that if there is going to be snow anywhere it will be in Salt Lake and south. We have always had a good trip down 93 and 318. Yes, it is a little remote so you don't want to break down but its not like you are the only one there and people are helpful. We've stopped just to stretch a little and people have stopped by to ask if we are OK. As in any winter travel you must look ahead at your weather and pick an appropriate window to travel in.
  • Myself I prefer I-15, but as has been mentioned, traffic is pretty bad between the Ogden area thru Spanish Fork, about 100 miles of yuk. You'll want to hit it between 9am and 3pm to minimize that. Either route, you often hit temperature inversions, which means a low fog, or haze which coupled with the sun being to the south means you'll probably benefit from good sunglasses.

As for road conditions, it's anyone's guess. We've been getting a fair amount of snow so far this winter, but they've been clearing it up pretty quick.
  • 93 is in the middle of no where land and you hardly see another vehicle at times. Just hope you don"t break down and need help. cell phone doesn't work at a lot of the way on 93. But I still use it going home every so often depending on time arriving in SLC. If it will be close to Rush hour we use 93. On way down I like to be getting close to SLC around 10 pm and drive past SLC when the traffic is minimal.
  • Thanks for your input - as always this board provides helpful input!!!
  • The state keeps I-15 free of snow as long as it isn't actively snowing. I live near Provo and the past few years we typically don't have snow on the lawn during the winter. It will snow and then melt. If you watch the forecast, you should be fine. Avoid driving during expected snow fall. Here in the valleys we can go weeks without snow falling in the winter.

South of Provo, you have a couple of short passes that can get snow.... one north of Fillmore and one south of Beaver... Cove Fort area.... Scipio.

There is construction between south Salt Lake City and Provo on I-15. They are pretty far along with the construction so traffic is driving on the new cement lanes but there may be some lane shifts on each end of the construction.
  • We run that route several times a year, including to Vegas and St George. We refuse to use I-15 because of the traffic for 100 miles around SLC and out of control drivers. US-93 is a very good 2 lane road and the NV DOT keeps it in good condition, even during snow storms. When you get to Ely, take US-6 west 22 miles to NV-318 then 318 back to US-93 and then to I-15, about 15 miles outside North Las Vegas. Much better route and saves you over 50 miles. We will be running that way in 10 days, on our way to Yuma.
  • I-15 would have better snow removal and more traffic to beat it clear. I would stay on I-15 even though I don't like interstates.
