The two storage areas that I've utilized, I guess have customer service that far exceeds what other posters must have experienced. In both cases they were fenced properties, with electronic gates. They had staff to escort me through the gate, advise what to do in case of a gate malfunction, and showed the space I was paying money to rent. They suggested the best way to come in and access the space I was renting. They chatted with me, found out what kind of trailer I was bringing in, and were just very friendly and informative. No, I'm not paying ridiculously high rent; ~$50/month with a discount for paying 6-12 months in advance.
I guess my rental experience is not the norm. And that's a shame.
I wonder: did they show you all that before you had committed to rent the space? Or was that after you had signed the papers?
I suspect most places will provide that level of service once you've signed on. But if you've just made a phone call and asked to see the lot, then there isn't much for them to do but say "come by and look". Then if you sign up, they'll walk you through the gate instructions, etc.
In both cases, I went by the facility. In the first one, it was a cold call visit, had never been there/contacted them, told them I was interested and told them what I had. They showed me around prior to making a decision. In the case of the 2nd facility (my current one-closer to home than the first one) I called them first, asked about availability, they said they had one space available and I was welcome to come check it out if interested. I told them I was and went by. This again prior to signing any paperwork.
I guess I've been pretty darned lucky when dealing with folks who provide trailer storage.
