RV parks do not honor advertised rate when booking?

Over the years I've noticed this at most RV parks. When making a reservation you make it at their current rate for the dates desired. You often make a deposit up to 100%. When arriving you find yourself having to pay a substantial increase over the booked rate. The employee says rates changed since you booked. You have no choice since their written policy does state that rates subject to change without notice.

Why do RV parks do this? Hotels do not, car rentals do not, airlines do not etc. The only way to avoid shock is to constantly check rates which often means calling...not exactly convenient. I've found this to be the policy at the majority of RV parks I've visited. Have others found the same?

  • been doing rv'ing for over 15 years and I never got hit like that with a rate increase upon arrival.
  • When booking a reservation I print out my receipt. Armed with that the park has no chance of charging me dime one more than my receipt shows (just another of the many reasons I NEVER stay at KOA's with all of their unmentioned additional fees.... but I digress). If they persist in trying to charge you additional fees, nicely/politely, appeal up the chain of command but be prepared to walk (drive), away. Assure them them that you will report the charge to the fraud department of your credit card company, do so and then get on the net and tell the world about their thieving ways.

What they are doing is fraud which is a crime. Be prepared to convince them that you WILL make a federal case about it (even if you aren't). Paying any additional charges simply makes you an accomplice to their crime by enabling their fraud and encouraging them to continue trying to do it to others.

    As always.... opinions and YMMV.

  • I worked for a private RV Park in the Glacier National Park area this past year. We did not have that problem. I haven't experienced what you describe. I usually stay at State and COE Parks.
