The "Dells" are called that because of the town "Wisconsin Dells". Lake Delton is the town next to it and is also just as big and popular as the Dells. Lots of choices for the area! most don`t have the large open sites the OP is asking for. they are smaller sites to allow for more people. You don`t go to the Dells to get away from people. you go there for the water parks!!!! the only thing left of the original Dells is the actual Dells seen from a Duck (Land or River) and if you have to ask what a Duck is then you need to visit the area!!! The original Dells was gone in the late 70`s when the water parks came in, it slowly became a tourist trap in the 80`s and is now a major tourist destination! search You Tube and you`ll find some home videos from there in the 60`s and 70`s, you can see the change from then to now. I remember Fort Dells on the corner of 12 and 23. there is now a Walgreens in it`s place. the old moat for the paddle boat is still back there. the stage coach used to come down from the hill back there, great memories!
BTW, we still try and visit every other year!
