Good for Cuba, though I cannot find any documentation that it actually happened. There were citations that cuba pledged 1000s of doctors for Syrian aid, but in actuality sent 256 along with 2 tons of medical supplies to settle a debt Cuba owed the Syrian government.
As for military spending, there is little correlation between military spending and military aggression. Iran and North Korea are both proven to be threats to regional stability in areas vital to the world's economy. It is in the interests of the US to keep both of those regimes in check. If that requires military presence in the strait of Hormuz and the Korean DMZ that is a price I feel is reasonable to pay.
Not sure I know about it to make a judgement about it, but I have read a few history books, I assume good translations, of Cuban history written by Cubans.
Is Iran a possible disruption to regional stability? Likely. Is it the only disrupter? NO! Is stability in the region in our national interest? Yes, but stability in the rest of the world is a good thing too. Are we defending "Democracy" in the area? I don't keep track of how often, but once in a while I hear of elections in Iran. Of course the US propaganda machine declares the elections can't be fair. (Tuesday less than 5% of the registered voters managed to increase the city taxes) OTOH, when was the last time you heard of any kind of election in Saudi Arabia? But we are selling weapons to SA so they can protect themselves from Iran. When was the last time Iran attacked us, not counting slapping the nose that was sniffing around them?
Cuba, 60 years after they declared their independence from USA, and we still can't make peace. The revolutionaries did not plan to be Communist, but the only countries that where will to risk the wrath of the US where the same countries that were already involved in a cold war with US.
If anybody could look at the world from POV of other countries, one of the most dangerous things a country can do is decide the local resources should benefit local people instead of US corporations.
If the corp. paid enough in taxes to pay for the military protection they demand there would be more money for other uses.
