In my younger days I would drive from Houston to Reynosa for a weekend of partying, cheap booze, food and women or SPI for surfing and a Saturday night in Matamoras. I never felt in danger in either place.
BUT, there is nothing to interest me there now. The only reason I do not vacation in RGV is it is not a vacation destination. It's no different crime wise than any other non-vacation destination. There are more high crime areas in Houston and San Antonio that I avoid. If you are going to stay in San Antonio to avoid crime you are in for a surprise.
