Sago Palms Poisonous to Pets & People

I sure didn't know this!

I even bought one and have been traveling with it in my MH. :S

For those of us traveling in the South this is a VERY popular plant in Florida used in landscaping, in CG's and just about every where.

FYI Just a heads up.
Sago Palm Seeds that fall to ground are the most toxic part. Easily picked up by our pets while camping.

  • Here is what it looks like.

Also Sold as Bonsai size house plant at Walgreens, Walmart etc.
  • When cutting one down the saw dust and chips will kill your pet just as easily as the seed from the plant. Dogs are attracted to the plant and will chew on any part. The juice shuts down their organs and death follows.
  • We probably have a 1000 of them here in our park, Never seen or heard of a dead dog here? Maybe they know to stay away from them.
  • Thanks for that info - as a Flatlander-turning-Snowbird, I'm trying to learn all the things we have to watch out for in FL.
  • I had two Sago's planted in my gardens for 9 years at my S & B and we have three dogs. They could care less about the tree. There are a lot of things that could hurt or kill your dog. There are berries which birds love and will make you and your animals sick etc. If you are worried about your animals think more about not leaving them outside unattended. The gators love dog meat. Owls, Eagles, Ospreys love unattended little guys. Oh and we have bobcats and coyotes also. There are plenty of real threats to your animals don't concern yourself with Sago palms. Oh did I mention the diamond backs and the pythons.
