We recently traded our Ontario registered fifth wheel for a another unit in Texas. It turned into a very difficult process as the dealer would not accept the trailer without a US registration - Texas in our case. After many false starts we finally hit on the solution from another RV dealer. We simply took the trailer to the crossing at Nuevo Progreso and had it imported into the US. This is all done on the US side and took 30 minutes and was completed at no cost. Once we had the document the dealer took it immediately. We tried another closer crossing but the agents had no idea what we were even talking about so it is worth the drive to Nuevo Progreso.

seems a lot of things are like your problem, talk to the right people and it gets done. LIKE ROAD service ,get a dummy on the phone and things don,t get done.

I guess I wonder about your declaration when crossing from Canada to the USA, where you state you are not bringing anything into the USA that you will be leaving there. I think this is part of the verbal declaration I make every time we cross into the US.

I do not ever recall making such a declaration driving into the US or of ever being asked that question and we cross very often. Unlike Mexico, I don't think there is a process in place to control for such things. The dealer did not hesitate to accept the trailer for a trade as long as he had the import document.

Do you have the documents necessary to IMPORT the new, I assume, fifth wheel into Canada. Also curious what plate is on the new RV.You will not get a Canadian plate/registration until the HST is paid.

The new trailer will never be imported into Canada. It has a Tx plate on it - well, not on it as we have no immediate plans to move it. It will stay in the US as we have no means or reason to move it to Canada. It is a 'destination' trailer that is more suited to our use. We do not travel with it.

Yep. We get most of the same questions. When we were still pulling we would also get Agricultural related questions and inspections. By far the easiest way to import a RV is to contact a Broker. I'm sure for a couple of hundred dollars plus importation fees they would do the work for you.

Just to clarify.....When we cross The US border agent always has a bunch of questions Where are you from? Where are you going? How long will you be in the USA? How much money do you have? (sometimes its Do you have more than $10000.?) and Are you bringing anything with you that you will be leaving in the USA? I'm not positive but I think I get the Are you bringing anything with you that you will be leaving.......every time. We cross mostly from Alberta but have done it from SK,MB and lots of times from ON so I think its a question we usually get.

Don't take this as anything but a question, but, if not about what you're leaving there, just what exactly do you think they're asking about when they say 'Do you have anything to declare?'.

As for the OP, unless you can sell the unit privately to someone else, it needs to leave the US.

I went through this helping friends of the family, they'd gone south for the winter, had health issues, flew home and passed away. Widow wasn't able to move the unit herself.

Just a correction - we NEVER entered Mexico. The importation is performed on the US side. You just have to go to a location where they normally import goods. It was a simple process - once we found a place that knew what they were doing.

Does not apply, as he left the US with it when he went to Mexico. Then re-entered from Mexico, not Canada, doing the correct paper work to import it! Chris

check the RIV website. when i brought my trailer up i paid the gst at the border along with the import fee. i had the required dot indpecyion done and then paid the pst when i went to plate it. the whoke process was a no brainer.

This trailer is on our owned lot in Mission. As far as I know no one cares if it has a plate on it. We do have one just no reason to put in on. There is perhaps an issue as I understand it needs to be inspected one a year or something to maintain the registration. We will have to see how this plays out. Inspection is no problem as a local garage will come and do it in the park - that much I know. We have complete registration so I don't think we have any problems in any case.
