Salt Springs Rec Area, Ocala FL

Question... am I reading their CG map correctly, are most of their RV sites first come, first served?

If so, how likely am I to get a site starting on a weekday in November?

Also, we are willing to dry camp if need be. Given that, how likely are we to find a spot there or at one of the nearby FS CGs?

Thanks!!

  • We have been there three times in the winter when many snowbirds are there for the winter and each time there were a few sites available. I'm don't know what it is like this time of year. I would give them a call. The people in the office are very helpful and should be able to answer your questions.

I was there last winter. Salt springs was full but I had no problem with Alexander springs and Juniper springs during the week. On the weekends they were full. They have first come first served on some sites the rest were controlled by RA. If you get there by Thurs you can stay for the W/E.
  • During this time of year site specific reservations are limited to just a few sites. During the swimming season many more site specific reservations are available. I would recommend you call the CG to determine availability or try reserving at www.recreation.gov
  • Go HERE to make reservations. During the fall, lot of hunters are there and the remainder of the winter, snow birds. Sites 17-15-5, 4, 3, are my favorite since we can get a clear satellite shot. Sites above 17 offer more shade.
Verizon seemed to work better this year, locals said a new tower was installed south of the park.????? Salt Springs IGA grocery while small will have almost everything you will need as to food.
  • They use reserveamerica.com. You can reserve specific sites and dates.
I personally detest RA as they charge an arm and a leg to change or cancel reservations.

Be sure to ride the ferry across the St. Johns River.

Great park BUT little to no cell coverage.
  • We have never been there but have worked at forest campgrounds where reservations were taken. There were selected sites that were reserved for drive up/walk-in campers only and people could not reserve them. In our case it was about 1/2 of the # of sites that were non-reservable. Many people may have cancelled their reservations during the shutdown. Don't know what availability is like in FL, but in 2 1/2 yrs we have never made a reservation and we have never been unable to get a site.(in other states)
