San Diego

Going on business trip from Shreveport, La. to San Diego with wife next week and was wondering if anyone could recommend either Mission Bay or Camp land.
I need to be close to downtown as that is where convention is, 15 min cab ride or so.
Will arrive Sat Sept 28 leaving out sometime Wed Oct 2, from there don't quite know yet either Las Vegas or on up in northern Calif
Thanks in advance
  • The only place I would suggest is several miles south of the convention center but near to the redcar metroline. A simple bus or taxi ride to the Redcar station and take the redcar train to the convention center station.

Chula Vista RV Resort. I consider it a 5 star RV Resort, very nice and next to the south end of San Diego Bay.
  • Campland is great if you have kids. But it is noisy and high energy.

I also vote for Chula Vista - and it is near the trolly which will take you to the convention center.
  • Santee is nice. We have stayed there a couple times. Haven't stayed at Chula Vista before.
  • I've been at Mission Bay, Campland and Chula Vista resort. All are the same distance from downtown. Here are my opinions on them:

If you're just staying inside the resort and not venturing outside, then Chula Vista is a cleaner and quieter site. That's probably because of all the signs that they have at every opening on the ground, telling you not to do this and that. Venturing outside the park after sunset is not recommended. The public park between the site and the waterfront is crowded during the day and is a gathering spot for suspicious crowds after dark. Not to mention it is littered with leftover craps from the parties and picnics that went on during the day. The waterfront looks nice, but too dirty to get into. The price is way up there for its location, and they charge for every little thing, including wifi that doesn't work all the time. We stayed here for 2 nights after reading all the high ratings that we saw, and we vowed never to return to this place.

Mission Bay is more fun. It's still a well maintained site. You can walk to the beach and do all the water activities. It has a nice bike path around the bay, and a huge park across the facility to walk around. It's well lit around the facility, and since it's between a couple mobile home complexes, it's not really open to the public and is not crowded. You can watch fireworks from across the bay every night. Price wise, it's about $10 less than Chula Vista Resort. We've tried a few other sites around San Diego in the past year and have decided to just stick with this plate in the future.

Campland is noisy, crowded and seems to cater more to the partying people.
  • Santee Lakes is nice, and close to the trolley, however the trolley commute is an hour one way, with a transfer part way. I did enjoy the stay for a downtown convention.

We have stayed at Chula Vista several times and never ran into any of the problems you mentioned. They are pricey though. Guess we have been lucky. Spending the weekend there again soon.
  • Depends on what you're looking for. Local campers often refer to Campland as Woodstock. Especially during the summer. We recently stayed with the grandkids at both Mission Bay and Chula Vista. Much preferred Chula Vista. I know the site gets bashed here a lot, but rvparkreviews will tell you everything you need to know.
