Santa Rosa to Cloverdale, CA?

We are heading north to the Mendocino coast Thursday and need a spot for 1 night to break the drive up. The Santa Rosa Fairgrounds RV Park will be closed then, Walmarts are prohibited and there is no National Forest nearby.

Liberty Glen CG on Lake Sonoma is a possibility but I can't confirm its actual location. We will head west on Hwy 128 but would like to stop before that.

Does anyone have spot that might work? Please PM if you would rather not post it.

Thank in Advance-

  • Trip Update-
We stayed at Bothe-Napa State park for a quick overnight. $35 for an unleveled small spot and a table. Probably not again.
Schooners Landing could be the best or worst place you ever stay. They put us inches away from a large tented fishing party. At 10:30 I had to ask them to turn the radio down (off). We moved the next day to a spot they reserve for full timers. A world apart. This spot was very quiet and a short walk to the beach. Schooners is a fish camp. If you have a boat, fish or dive for abalone it could work out great for you. If not well....
Jackson Forest was one of the best spots we've found and we had it almost all to ourselves (Thanks- Dan!)
  • When I have been up at Lake Sonoma to Stargaze, I have spent the night at some of the pullouts on the side of the road with my camper. I have never had a problem with any of the rangers.

    Bob in Oakland, Calif.
  • Thanks for the replies.

So nobody has stayed at Lake Sonoma?

Thanks for the heads up on the Jackson Forest. We are staying in Albion with friends for 3 days then 2 days in Albion Harbor at Schooners Landing so we will be close and will try to check it out.

  • The KOA at Cloverdale is pretty nice -- I know that is not boondocking, but it is not right on the highway. Boondocking is scarce in that area.

There is also some great camping near Ft. Bragg in the Jackson State Demonstration Forest run by Cal Fire.
  • We stopped at the Home Depot lot in Windsor several years ago. Not sure if they still allow it.
  • you can dry camp in the parking lot of the Indian casino @ Hopland.
