Going to be a bit buggy, but anytime in the summer will be bugs below North Carolina, especially around the coast. Great place to see history and enjoy some pretty good food.
Double ditto. November through March is the best time to see Savannah: mild temps and no bugs, ticks, etc. In our opinion, December is the best time to see Savannah with its holiday light shows and decorations such as the parade of boats. Skidaway SP is a good choice.
For summer we stay in the mountains which have more comfortable temps and fewer gnats and mosquitoes than the coasts. There are a number of historic cities and towns in the mountains that are enjoyable. Just a quick thought brings up two such examples:
-Lexington, VA with its two universities dating to before the Civil War; Goshen Pass and Natural Bridge are nearby.
-Asheville, NC with the Biltmore mansion, arts community, local farms, whitewater rafting, and AT activities
