We live in FL and we’ve traveled north along the East coast where we’ve seen Savannah, Charleston, Williamsburg, etc. This year we are headed to Staunton, VA where we will setup our base camp and explore the Shenandoah region for a month. But....Traveling from FL to VA will take us through Columbia, Charlotte, maybe Winston-Salem, heading towards Roanoke or Lynchburg and on up to Staunton VA. What to see along the way? Any suggestions? Someone said Mt Airy for Mayberry tv show stuff, but is it worth a stop? What’s out there? ??

Savannah and Charleston are both well worth a few days if you havent been there, food along the waterfront area in Savannah as well as a tour of the cemetary, are must do's. Charleston has a tour given by (?) cant remember his name that gets rave reviews. Asheville and the Biltmore estate in NC, as well as a run up to Mount Mitchell, then follow the Blue Ridge Pkwy if you can up to the Va state line. Mt. Airy is nearby and if you do stop Hit Aunt Bea's for some Barbecue and a bottle or two of sauce to go. Wallys filling station and a few other spots are still set up to occupy a tourist for an hour or two. Then Up to Fairystone state park in Va. Lovely quiet park with a nice lake and you can collect some fairystones. Over to Galax Va. to the Bluegrass hall, and then North to Roanoke and Lynchburg areas, If nothing else, around milepost 27 (i think) you can exit for Crabtree falls, nice short hike to beautiful falls used in the TV show Vampire Diaries. Then on to Staunton off of I 81. Just a few ideas anyway.

It does show how attaching a town to a tv show and characters popular for 60 years can save a small town. They do have some good wineries in the area. Not really much to see in Columbia, we live just outside. If you’re looking for a nice place to spend the night you might like Lake Wateree State Park. North of Columbia off I77.

seems you have picked the most boring route thru NC you could. Charlotte is not worth stopping for. Actually go thru as fast as you can. No better than Detroit. In truth. If you want to see good stuff in NC. You will need to run thru the Mountains, or the coast.As for stopping in MT Airy. IF you like Andy. It is worth it. But it was NOT used on the show. Just Andy's home town. IF you have time Take a partial ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mt Mitchell is the highest peak East of the Missippi. And Grandfather Mountain is a good visit, as is the Biltmore house, Lake Lure, And Chiminey Rock. But none of that is close to Charlotte, or the route thru it.

It's hard to make recommendations w/o knowing what you're interested in. Things we'd like --Old Salem Museum and Gardens and Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-SalemThe NC Zoo in Asheboro (a little off your route but very well worth it if you like zoos)The Carolina Raptor Center in HuntersvilleLots of Nascar related stuff around Charlotte and Mooresville if you're interested in that kind of thingIf you like barbecue plan to come through Lexington around meal time and stop at one of the many barbecue joints. You can find plenty of reviews on TripAdvisor, Yelp, etc.Yadkin Valley Wineries

Biltmore estate in Asheville. If you have not been there its worth a visit. Plus, downtown Asheville is full of good restaurants and has a Mast General Store and is easy walking. Blue Ridge Parkway is there and just north of the entrance is the Folk Art Center which is quite interesting to go through. Mount Mitchell is on the way north and its the highest point in N.C and has a restaurant that is good. You can take the BRP all the way up to Grandfather Mountain and the Boone area although you may need to get off in Linville because of construction

Not really much to see in Columbia, we live just outside. If you’re looking for a nice place to spend the night you might like Lake Wateree State Park. North of Columbia off I77.
