One note on cancelling, if you wait until there is an evacuation order you may not have to pay the cancellation fee. Now I am not sure, I would want to evacuate during an order as traffic can back up in a hurry at that time. I would probably not worry about the small amount that you would lose by leaving early (or cancelling early).
BTW, there are not usually a great many hurricanes that hit the east coast. The Gulf usually has many more that make landfall or cause evacuations.
