Sequoia & Yosemite area campgrounds

It appears to me that I will have to stay outside the national parks if I want full hook-up. I am interested in hearing your thoughts on campgrounds, located outside the parks, that will put me in a good position to tour the national parks.

Thanks
  • For Sequoia, it's easier to come in through Hwy 180 and Kings Canyon National Park. General Sherman is about 30 minutes from Kings Canyon NP. There is no great camping option. I like the campground in Grant's Grove (Sequoia Grove of Kings Canyon) and love Cedar Grove down in valley for Kings Canyon but no hookups as you stated.

There is an RV Park on Hwy 180 between Fresno and Kings Canyon but I can't find it online with a quick google. I didn't try Good Sam. It's not much more than a glorifed parking lot but I think it has hook-ups. There are sequoias at Mariposa Grove in Yosemite but not as big as General Sherman and Grant the best I remember.
  • When we visit Yosemite we also stay at the Mariposa KOA. At Sequoia National Park we stay at the Kaweah RV Park in Three Rivers. Full hookups in both places.
  • For Sequoia I would suggest Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers. We prefer it over Kaweah RV park.

Yosemite, there are dozens depending on what gate. None are particularly close, at least an hour to the valley floor. We generally suck it up and stay in the park with no hookups. If I had to have hookups the only place I would suggest is Bass Lake RV resort at Bass Lake just outside Oakhurst. It's membership, but do rent available spaces to non-members. Bass lake is a destination itself so it can by busy in peak summer.
  • Sequoia RV Ranch at Three Rivers is your best choice for Sequoia NP. KOA in Mariposa is your best choice for Yosemite but don't look for a lot of space between sites.
  • We will be going in a couple weeks. I will be staying at Yosemite Ridge Resort which is on 120. I have spoke to several folks who have stayed there and were happy campers. Its only 12 miles from the west gate.
