Shaw Direct Refresh

I put this in the Snowbird Forum as a lot of Canadians monitor it & it only applies to Canadians using Shaw Direct south of the US/Canadian border. Hope that is ok with the administrator, if not feel free to move it.

I was curious if anyone "Refreshed" your Shaw Direct receiver while in the US?
If so did you encounter any problem doing it in the US using the US IP address?

I am assuming that if you did it you were using the Internet using Shaw Direct's website to do the refresh. The best option is to refresh as close to leaving for your US destination, but if any length of time lapses between this & powering up the receiver you might have to refresh.

Thanks for any input on this.
  • I suspect the US sat. providers don't care about Shaw Direct in USA. I suspect the content providers, who only license the content for distribution in Canada only, care.
  • Fellow Snowbirds, sounds like it is ok to refresh on the Shaw website while in the US. I am aware that one should not call them or if you really do have to call don't tell them you are in the US and try to mask out your phone number like use Skype and don't ask for coordinates for a US site....ouch wouldn't that be a give away!
You know Shaw got caught in the middle of all this, I think they were pressurized to reverse their stand from US Satellite providers not the CRTC as they probably could care less as their authority below the border is 0.
BTW Dishpointer works excellent every where I tried it http://www.dishpointer.com/

Thanks everyone for your responses, great site for help.
  • Shaw has relaxed to a point. Do not mention you are out side of Canada if you have to talk to them and if you need coordinates for setting up your dish use a site called Dishpointer.com as they are not allowed to give you them any more either. I'm also told if you have had the home away from home they will not bother you to switch it to the new 2nd home location to charge you more. Grandfathered so to speak. New customers will not be so luck, so don't tell them you want a 2nd location :)
  • I had to refresh once last year when we were down in Quartzsite which I did on the internet. No problem
  • Yes, I've refreshed Shaw from Mexico, but I haven't needed to do it lately. I'm not sure if Shaw could/would block you with a non-Canadian ISP address. I have a Hughes internet dish through a Canadian Hughes reseller which probably has a US IP address (since some websites say I'm somewhere near Germantown Maryland which is where the Hughes sat station is) and there are many rural Canadians using Hughes, how would Shaw know whether Hughes users were Canadian or US?

I think that the concern expressed about Shaw and Canadians in the US is overblown. I had detailed E-mail and phone discussions with them before buying my Winegard auto dish, I told them I would use it in the US and I was interested in knowing how long the service on the two existing sats would last. They told me they couldn't support me down there but they didn't take any action unlike Bell did in the past.
