Shawnee National Forest campground advice?

We are thinking about doing a long weekend trip to the Shawnee National Forest in October. Prbably arriving on Wed, leaving Sunday or Monday.

I've read the info on the NFS site, and the Dows. Just interested in getting some input from people who have been to some of these campgrounds.

We will be in a 26' travel trailer. We can do fine without hookups, as long as there is water available if needed.

We value quiet, scenery, and wildlife. Not concerned about playgrounds, or condition of showers etc, since we have our own shower.

All input appreciated!

  • Thanks!

Any more info or pics anyone has would be great. It's really hard to get a feel for a campground from the descriptions alone.
  • This spring we stayed in Oak Point Campground in the Lake Glendale Recreation Area. Campsites have electric and water. Very nice wooded area on a small lake with good fishing and boat rentals.

Here are some pics. You can see a little of the area and the lake in the background of a few
  • Southern Illinois? The campground at Garden of the Gods is quiet, no hookups, 12 sites. We were there a few years ago and they had a hand pump for water. There is a lot to see in southern Illinois.
